Figma changed how it bills in March 2025. Instead of editors and free viewers, there are now Full, Dev and Collab seats at different prices on every plan, and anyone can request an upgrade. That makes seat management the biggest factor in what your company pays.
This guide covers every plan and seat type, what changes the invoice and how to keep upgrades under control.

Since March 2025, Figma bills by seat type: Full seats for designers, Dev seats for developers using Dev Mode and Collab seats for FigJam and Slides, with viewers free. Admins approve seat upgrades by default, and approved seats are added to the next invoice prorated from the day of approval. Organization and Enterprise are billed annually only, and on Professional, editors added mid-term on an annual plan are charged at the monthly rate until renewal.

- Seat upgrades from requests. Viewers can request Full or Dev seats, and approved upgrades are billed prorated on the next invoice.
- Auto-approve settings. If admins switch on auto-approval, seat upgrades flow onto the bill without review.
- Mid-term monthly rate. On annual Professional plans, editors added mid-term are charged the monthly rate until renewal.
- Dev seats for developers. Developers who need Dev Mode need a paid Dev seat, from $12 on Professional to $35 on Enterprise.
- The SSO jump. SSO and activity logs start on Organization, where Full seats cost $55 a month.
How Figma pricing has changed
- 11 March 2025 Figma replaced editor and viewer billing with Full, Dev and Collab seats and new per-seat prices, applied from each customer's first renewal on or after that date. Source
Which Figma plan should you choose?
- Starter. Choose if you are exploring Figma with a few files and do not need shared libraries.
- Professional. Choose if a small team needs team libraries, Dev Mode and unlimited version history.
- Organization. Choose if you need SSO, activity logs, branching or organization-wide design systems.
- Enterprise. Choose if you need guest access controls, expiring public links and the strictest admin controls.
Is Figma worth the price?
Figma is the standard for product design, and Professional is good value for small teams. The seat model rewards careful admin work: giving developers and stakeholders Dev and Collab seats instead of Full seats, and keeping upgrade approvals on, matters more than the headline price.
You are likely overpaying if: Developers and PMs hold Full seats when they only need Dev or Collab seats, or seat upgrades are auto-approved and never reviewed.
How to pay less for Figma
- Match seat type to role. Give developers Dev seats and PMs Collab seats; only people who design need Full seats.
- Keep upgrade approval on. Leave seat upgrades on manual approval so requests do not become invoices by default.
- Commit annually on Professional. A Full seat drops from $20 to $16 a month on annual billing.
- Audit seats before renewal. Downgrade people who have not edited files in 90 days to View or Collab seats.
- Get competing quotes. Penpot is free, and Sketch starts at $12 per editor a month, which gives you leverage on Organization deals.

| Tool | Entry price | Cheaper when |
|---|---|---|
| Penpot | Free (Professional); Unlimited $7 per editor per month, capped at $175 | You want an open-source design tool |
| Sketch | $12 per editor per month (Standard, annual) | Your designers work on Macs and need no browser editor |
| Canva | $250 per person per year (Business) | Your non-designers mostly make marketing assets |
The bigger picture: why Figma bills drift
Figma spend drifts because seat upgrades are requested by the people doing the work, approved by design leads and billed to finance weeks later. Without a regular review, developers and PMs end up on Full seats and nobody downgrades them.
Leavers stay billable
Figma seats outlive the people who used them.
Owners, seat counts and renewal dates for every vendor in one place.
The notice window closes
Figma renews at list price with last year's seat count.
Renewal alerts on every contract
The owner is alerted before renewals and expiries, with the signed terms one click away.
Teams buy their own accounts
Departments upgrade on a card without checking what the company already owns.
Purchase requests with approvals
Requests route and get approved before anyone buys; Z1 "Prompt to buy" keeps it fast.
Charges nobody approved
Mid-term seat additions land outside the original PO.
AP automation with PO matching
Invoices are matched to POs and receipts before payment.
No view of total software spend
Spend is spread across cards, invoices and entities.
Spend by vendor and category, synced two ways with your ERP.
The bottom line
Professional is the right plan for most small teams, and Organization is worth it only when SSO and shared design systems are real requirements. Review seat types every quarter and before every renewal, and keep upgrade approvals on. Zapro is built to run that renewal habit across every tool your company buys.
